All hail the keyboard
Leave your mouse behind for the good ol’ keyboard. Spend an hour just using the keyboard (tab, shift+tab, space and enter) to navigate and interact with your favorite websites and applications. Why not share your experience in a blog post?
Watch your favourite movie with audio description turned on. You might be surprised at how much of the storyline is communicated visually, and amazed at the skill required to provide descriptions. Do you have any videos that need to be audio described?
Having great colour contrast between your text and background is one of the easiest things to do. Simply use a tool like Lea Verou’s Contrast Ratio to see if your text shines. Nice strong contrast is great for people with low vision as well as when you are using your mobile outside in sunny conditions.
Watch Stella Young’s TED Talk with no sound and captions (subtitles) on. Captions help people who are Deaf, in noise environments, when you’ve forgotten your headphones and gives your SEO a boost. As Stella puts it, ‘Smiling at a television screen isn’t going to make closed captions appear for people who are deaf’. So get captioning.
